Hedi Slimane for YSL S/S 2013: Underwhelming but Promising?

Hedi Slimane has finally unveiled his debut collection since he took over the helm of Creative Director for Saint Laurent Paris, which is of course formerly known as the fashion house of Yves Saint Laurent. The 44-year-old former Dior Homme creative director showcased his debut collection at Paris Fashion Week last October 1, 2012, while maintaining his residence and work in Los Angeles even though the YSL headquarters is based in Paris.

The iconic fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent was well-known for being one of the pioneers when it comes to bohemian chic look and for infusing it with androgynous styles for women as well. And it seems like Hedi Slimane went down memory lane by paying tribute to some of YSL’s iconic designs, but much to our dismay, fell short of pulling off an incredibly amazing debut collection.

The whole spring/summer collection consisted of floppy hats, ribbon front-tied sheer lace and chiffon blouses, sparkling embellishments, long and flowy dresses, as well as the scene-stealing floor-length capes. As for the dominant color palettes, Slimane mainly stuck with blacks and whites, while injecting some colors here and there through splashes of gold, silver, red, beige, and even some animal prints as well. Check out some of these looks we’ve hand picked for your convenience and let us know what you honestly think of Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for Saint Laurent Paris!

Quite a lot of critics and writers were underwhelmed with Slimane’s YSL debut, and some are even linking Slimane’s Los Angeles residence as one of the reasons why he fell short of having a very inspired debut collection. In fact, many of which are even saying that these pieces are meant for the California girl instead of the Parisian-chic woman. In spite of these criticisms, a lot of fashion personalities think that Slimane still holds the promise of blooming and coming into his own with his next collections for Saint Laurent Paris—and we certainly hope so as well!
